Join us in welcoming back Jessica McCrea

We are very excited to share with you that Jessica McCrea is coming back to rejoin our team at Riah Hair Studio (formerly Salon Rage) on Leap Day, February 29, 2012.  Jessica started at Salon Rage when she was 18 years old.  She loved the profession and entered Beauty School shortly after her employment began in 2001.  She worked her way up the system and proudly carries the role of a Master Stylist.

Last May when we decided to relocate our salon to Furlong, Jessica didn’t think she could make the additional 15 minute drive each way with starting a family and her second child on the way.  She felt she had to find a salon closer to her home.  She started a position as a stylist in a salon closer to her home, but something didn’t seem right.  After a year of working at two different salons, she reevaluated her career path and decided that she needed to be back in the environment that best suites her.   She had created so many relationships with RAGE that with the change also came a sense of loss. Not only did she miss the family she had grown up with; the people she worked with at RAGE, but she also missed our clients and friends. The great thing about life is that relationships don’t always have to end, they can continue as a friendship.  So when Jessica made the decision that she wanted to come back, we welcomed her with open arms.  We are so thrilled to welcome Jessica and all of her clients back to Riah Hair Studio! Just in time for our new expansion opening in April.  We have missed you so much and we look forward to a beautiful future!

Bad Hair Day?! Easy Ideas to turn your bad hair day into a pretty hair day.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Bad hair days; we all have them, even hair stylists.  Fortunately, there are some easy fixes to taming disobedient locks.  Whether your hair is worn down or swept up, each tip will give you an appropriate look for any situation.

Problem: Unruly bangs

Solution: Hairline twist or braid

All you need for this fix is couple bobby pins or a pretty barrette to fasten your hair.  Take the front section of your hair, including bangs and depending how much hair you want to pull back is how much hair to take.  Start above your eye on either side and make a part going back towards your crown. Twist hair flat and away from your face starting at the part and slowly moving your fingers towards your other eye.  One you have secured all of the hair framing the front of your face, twist ends and place a bobby pin across the twist hiding it underneath the hair you are leaving down.  The same can be done as a braid, and if you need help, as your stylist to show you!

Problem: Limp, Lifeless Hair

Solution: Add some waves

There is a new curling iron out on the market that looks like a rod.  It is basically a curling iron without the clamp.  This makes it easy for people with longer lengths to curl their hair and by wrapping the hair around the rod instead rolling the curling iron around your hair, it creates a softer wave that is such a popular look right now.  To do this, take the top half of your hair from ear to ear and secure with a clip or pony tail holder.  Spray the hair you have left down with a setting spray or light hold hair spray.  Taking one inch sections working from ear to ear, hold hair out and hold rod pointing straight down.

Starting near the root wrap hair away from the face around the rod to the end, being careful not to burn your finger!  Curl the bottom and then let the top down, spray and repeat process.

Problem: Disorderly Hair

Solution: Chic pony tail

Pony tails don’t have to be boring, and if it’s dressed up, they can be appropriate for any occasion.  Gather all hair back and secure with a clear rubber band, or any type of small hair band, leaving some face framing pieces falling free.  Take a 1 inch section from the underneath of your pony tail and wrap around your hair tie.  Secure the wrapped hair with a bobby or hair pin and spray with a strong hold hair spray.  For added detail to this classic look, tease your crown area.  Also adding a hair accessory such as a flower that compliments your outfit is a great way to spice up your look.

Upcoming Expansion Spring 2012

We are happy to announce that we have quickly outgrown our new home in Furlong, PA.  Renovations are underway at our current location to enhance and expand Riah Hair Studio. As many of you are aware, we relocated our salon from Southampton, PA in May of 2011.  Within 6 months of our move, we have prospered far beyond our expectations.  Our Furlong location started as a boutique studio with a very intimate feel and with our expansion, we will maintain intimacy while creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere with a very modern feel.  In addition to a larger space, we will be teaming up with a well know local make up company, Smart Cosmetics Studio of Doylestown.  Riah Hair Studio, a Rage Salon, will transform back into a full service salon offering nail care, permanent make-up, facials, massage and waxing.  We are very excited to share with you as we progress, and all construction should be complete by April 2012.  As we embark on our next endeavor, we would like to extend a huge thank you to you, our clients and friends, because without you, none of this would be possible!

Hair Color Trends for 2012

Trends in the beauty industry seem to change with the seasons, and it is our job as stylists to stay on top of growing trends and transitions.  The forecast for 2012’s hair color is full of natural and luminous hues with tons of subtle dimension.   By adding dimension to your hair, using a few different colors no more than two shades darker or lighter than your base color, your hair will appear less flat.  In addition to brightening up your skin tone and bringing out your best features, multi-dimensional hair color gives the hair a glowing affect and much more light reflect.  This technique should be done with very fine highlights so that the colors transition into one another creating a radiant contrast.  If you are going to pay to have your hair colored, it should look like it is professionally colored,  not as if you put color from a box on your entire head.   The only hair color that should have little dimension is the darkest of dark shades, because the darker the hair, the less tone and reflect it will have.  So for the New Year, and a new you, try a multi-dimensional, multi faceted hair color.  If it is change you have been seeking, but do not want to stray from the color you feel comfortable wearing, you don’t need to do anything drastic.  Add to what you already have!  If you find something that works best for you, stick with it, but there’s always room for enhancements.  After all, as hair stylists, our job is to make you the best you can be!  Here are some examples of how others have updated their already luscious locks:

Brunettes:

Mila Kunis and Eva Mendes have deeper rich beautiful brunette tones but by adding subtle, fine highlights throughout gives them a sun-kissed glow which enhances their skin and eyes, and livens up their hair by imitating natural movement

Blondes:

A natural looking blonde should never be one solid color.  It should have darker and lighter tones.  Trending in 2012 is a honey golden blonde with brighter face framing highlights and dimensional highlights throughout like Nicole Richie and Jennifer Aniston.

Reds:

The forecast for red heads this year will be warmer tones.  Try to avoid cool reds such as ones with violet or blue undertones.  Go for a natural copper or true red hair color like Kate Walsh or Scarlette Johansson.   Ready to make a change and go red? Red is a tough color to keep vibrant, so glazing and regular touch ups are a must!

This Holiday Season Support your Local Small Business Owners

“It doesn’t matter where you go in life…….it’s who you have beside you.”

Christmas 2011 — Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high
gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods –
merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This
year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine
concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift
giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes
there is!

It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in
a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?
Everyone — yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates
from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some
health improvement.

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned
detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a
book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down
the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift
receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or
driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants — all offering gift
certificates. And, if your intended isn’t the fancy eatery sort, what about
a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this
isn’t about big National chains — this is about supporting your home town
Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn’t use an oil change for their car, truck or
motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a
local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is
struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin
their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery
and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave
your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at
your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese
lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about
fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to
burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that
China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about
US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow
their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our
communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn’t imagine.
THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Forward this to everyone on your mailing list — post it to discussion
groups — throw up a post on Craigslist in the Rants and Raves section in
your city — send it to the editor of your local paper and radio stations,
and TV news departments. This is a revolution of caring about each other,
and isn’t that what Christmas is about?

Ombre Hair Trend

by Christina Cracchiolo

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Ladies listen up! I would like to introduce to you to the hottest spring/summer hair and fashion trend of 2011. Celebrities like Drew Barrymore and Ashlee Simpson and fashion designers like Herve Leger are obsessed with it! Its called THE OMBRE. Ombre in french means shaded or graduated in tone.  Heres a little bit of history on The Ombre, it originated from the fashion industry where designers created color graduation on dresses, tops and skirts. In the hair world, The Ombre trend is when you have a dark root then your color gradually fades to much lighter peices on the ends. This craze is so fabulous, its versitle! So if your style is conservative then this can definately be achieved with a subtle and sophisticated look. If your style is funky and intense then this look can be fulfilled as well. The Ombre is popular on people with length but trying it on cropped, short styles could give it a fierce effect as well. Who knew that having roots would be so trendy? Highlights can be tough to keep up with every 4-6 weeks and time consuming, but this earthy and sunkissed look is very easy to maintain. With that being said, make and appointment with your favorite hair stylist and consult about getting The Ombre.

To our Dearest Supporters of Salon Rage

To our Dearest Supporters of Salon Rage;

This newsletter comes from a deep place in my heart filled with appreciation, gratitude and love. When I opened Salon Rage on March 02 of 1998, I truly had no idea how fortunate I would be. From day one at the Redwood Shopping Center, the community not only accepted Salon Rage, but it encouraged and supported my vision.

My vision at that time was just like the movie “Field of Dreams”….if I build it they will come. And came you did. So much that three years later, while I was expecting my daughter, we had outgrown our space at the Redwood Shopping Center location. For those of you that know me really well, you might say that I couldn’t change it or move stuff around anymore, therefore I had to find another space as I love to rearrange. On September 23, 2002 Salon Rage opened the new location at the old landmark Painters Nest. From the front door to the back we gutted the entire inside and built a salon so beautiful and unique that the business grew even larger immediately. We went from a team of 15 to 50 overnight. My attitude was then, and is now, that if we can educate ourselves and educate others, while providing great services to the community, we would continue to be successful.

Eleven years later, I can say that I have been blessed with a loyal, dedicated, and artistic team. Many of them are like family to me. I have also been blessed with great clients and friends. All of you have contributed in our success or you wouldn’t be receiving this newsletter. Whatever your role has been with Salon Rage, I want to thank you with all my heart.

Today I want to tell you about my next endeavor. I am extremely excited about it. I have decided to relocate Salon Rage to a new location with a new name. Most branding companies would say that you never change your name after you are established, but as usual, I believe in doing what feels right, not what is said to be right. The new salon will be called Riah Hair Studio. Salon Rage -although it is an acronym for Right Attitude and Great Experience does not seem to exemplify who we are to the public that doesn’t know what it stands for. I wanted to rename Salon Rage a few years ago but the timing wasn’t right. Now the timing is perfect. Riah (pronounced Rye Ah) is my daughter’s nickname and ironically spelled in reverse is Hair. Riah (Riley) and Hair are the two passions in my life. The Studio ends the name because it is exactly what Riah Hair Studio is. It is an intimate social space with boutique flair.

We are open in both locations (both Salon Rage and Riah Hair Studio) until around May 28th, unless otherwise notified. Please make sure to sign up for our email updates on our website at www.salonrage.net to stay current on what’s happening. After May 28th, we will be completely relocated to our new Studio space at 3488 York Road in Furlong in the Village Center. If you are wondering where Furlong is, I can clarify. It is about a 15 minute drive from Salon Rage. The Studio is on the corner of York Road and Edison Furlong Road. A few landmark stores in the immediate area are Hendrixson’s Furniture, Cornerstone Gym, Furlong Lamp Company, Artefacts and the Back to the 50’s hot pink diner. It is convenient to Newtown, Richboro, New Hope, Buckingham, Doylestown, Southampton and most of Bucks County. It has a great big parking lot that is super easy to get in and out of.

I am hoping that we have the opportunity to continue to see you in our new space and provide you with the right attitude and great experience as we have always strived to do. If you have any questions please feel comfortable contacting me directly on my cell 215-499-2209 or by email at donnaroggio@salonrage.net.

Sincerely,

Donna Roggio Straff

Dirty or Clean? Signs to Look for to Ensure Safe Waxing

Body waxing has increasingly become more popular and a regular part of the grooming routine for many people. With any type of salon procedure, you need to feel confident about the salon/spa and the Estheticians performing the service.  Unfortunately, not all salon or spas practice safe waxing, leaving you vulnerable to something much more serious than uneven brows and bikini lines. You could get an infection or even a disease. It’s your health and you have a right to protect yourself.

While not everything can be measured in just what you see, here are some general things to look for when choosing a salon or spa for your waxing and hair removal needs

Good Signs for Safe Waxing:
You fill out a client questionnaire.
This helps them find out if you have any allergies, health conditions, contraindications, or are taking any medicine which would not make you a candidate to receive the hair removal procedure. If they are taking your health into account with a questionnaire, they are more likely to be following sanitary measures too.

Paper is placed down for body hair removal. It’s much more hygienic than just having someone lay down on sheets.

The technician wears gloves. Any type of hair removal can draw blood, even if it’s a tiny amount. And skin is much more vulnerable to infection right after waxing or sugaring. Gloves help protect both the client and the technician.

They don’t double-dip. Once a stick (applicator) has been placed into product and touched your skin, it should be thrown away. The stick should never put back into a pot of wax or sugaring paste because it could contaminate the product, and then infect clients.

Panties are given to you for a regular bikini wax. They’re disposable and much more hygienic than wearing your regular cloth panties.

Bad Signs for Safe Waxing:
Things are a mess when touring the facility. Get a tour of the salon or spa before scheduling your appointment. Pay attention to the lighting in the room, where tools and supplies are stored and the cleanliness and organization of the salon or spa.

Shelves and containers are dusty. If they aren’t doing the basic cleaning, are they really going to be following sanitation measures?

Implements are put back into a drawer or cabinet after use. There are items that should be sanitized after use; like metal tweezers, scissors and combs, by being place in a barbicide/bensacide solution. If they use implements and put it away where they got it, then they are most likely not sanitizing them.

Wax pots (heating units) have wax all over them. Waxing can be messy, but a special product cleans wax off pots, so there is no excuse.

They have a hard time explaining their sanitation measures when asked. If they can’t describe it, they’re not doing it.

Now Hear This!

Ear “candling” or “coning” is a natural ear healing technique that dates back to 2500 B.C.  Ancient cultures, including the Egyptians, practiced this therapeutic art which is now experienced around the world.  The purpose of this technique is to clean out accumulated wax and fungus from the ears.

Through a process called “convection”, softer waxes and toxins will be drawn out of the ear, oxidized and turned into vapors during this holistic procedure.  This procedure lasts about one hour, and two candles will be placed in each ear one after the other.  Ear candling should be performed by a certified massage therapist.

The candles are paraffin cylinders that are gently placed into your outer ear.  The cylinder is then lit at the opposite end and the low flame burns slowly, creating a vacuum which softens and pulls the old wax up the base of the candle.  This process creates a sense of soothing warmth and is painless.  Ear candling is a very relaxing process helping you to hear clearer and feel “cleaned out”.  Ear candling can be done once a month, or once every couple of months to keep your wax build up normal.  For more severe cases, once every two weeks is enough time between sessions to allow natural wax to replenish itself.  If you can, imagine a hollowed out candle that can remove months and years of impacted and stored ear wax.  Imagine how much better you could feel and hear after this procedure is complete.

Many people attest to the value and benefits of ear candling; especially those with more wax build up, those who have had previous ear injuries or infections, those who wear hearing aids, those who work outdoors (in a dusty environment), or those who perform in water activities.

Fall Into Facials

We take care of ourselves by exercising and eating healthy because it makes us feel good and look younger.  You can apply that same “fit” philosophy to skin care.

Facials are a vital step towards healthy balanced well maintained skin and a great alternative to expensive surgeries, botox, collagen injections and chemical/laser peels.  A facial is a professional skin care treatment that is performed by a licensed skin professional called an esthetician.  Once thought of as a luxury, facials have become an integral part of a normal healthy skin care regimen.

Fall is a great time to start a healthy skin care routine!  The summer sun and heat can dehydrate our skin leaving it dry and listless.  A facial can rejuvenate your skin, wake up a sluggish circulation, reduce puffiness around the eyes and enrich your complexion with radiant good health.  Facials are also deeply soothing – some believe they can be as good for your mood as they are for your skin.  Most facials include a massage of the face, neck, shoulders, arms and hands which is very relaxing.  By starting your healthy skin care routine now – you can have a healthy glow by the holidays!

What does a facial involve?
There are six steps to most facials: cleansing, exfoliation, massage, mask, toning and moisturizing.  Facials thoroughly cleanse your face and remove the top dead layers of the skin resulting in beautiful and glowing skin.

A facial helps in faster cell renewal and relaxes the muscles of the face. Facials can also treat problems like dark patches, acne, restoring skin color and toning the skin.
How often?
The skin’s cells regenerate every 21 – 28 days so it makes sense for a facial maintenance program to be scheduled every four to six weeks to remove any build up of dead cells.   Some treatments initially need to have visits closer together until a maintenance program can start.

Most facials start off with a detailed assessment of your skin type and maintenance plan by your esthetician.  Your esthetician will use products best suited to you and will advise on a regular cleansing routine for you to follow at home.

Overall Benefits of Facials

Restoring your skin’s health

Hydrating and nourishing the skin to prevent wrinkles

Relaxing tight, over-used facial muscles that cause deep lines

Relaxing your mind and re-energizing your soul

Bringing oxygen and blood circulation to facial muscles

Stimulating new collagen and elastin through cell renewal

Removing dead cells that cause a dull complexion

Educating you on how to properly take care of your skin

How To Choose The Right Salon For You.

There are so many salons to choose from.  How do you decide which one is right for you?  It’s not just about getting your hair cut and colored, it is about the quality of service you receive and your experience. How to find the right salon for “you” is essential.  The salon is dedicated to being the finest, you can bet the stylists are too.  The following ideas will guide you in planning your beauty day and finding the salon and stylist that is best for you! (Please note that these suggestions is geared to a hair salon/stylist but can be utilized for any beauty treatment, spa or salon).

Initial Phone Call

First impressions count, so take note of the service you receive over the telephone.  Below are some topics that should be covered or should be asked about on the initial phone call with the salon reception team.

-Do you have coarse hair, curly hair, or fine hair?  Long or short hair?  Ask the receptionist for a recommendation on who would be the best stylist for your specific hair type.

-Inquire about the qualifications of each stylist.  In addition to booking your appointment, the receptionist can answer questions about experience level, qualifications, and areas of expertise and personal style of each stylist.  Most salons will offer a variety of stylists at different levels and price points.  Ask the receptionist what requirements allow the stylist to excel to the next level.  You should not focus on the length of time someone is doing hair but what education courses they have taken and what kind of client retention a stylist has.

-Inquire about the educational program in the salon.  How frequently are classes held and who in the salon attends them?  Having a solid educational program will ensure that the stylists in the salon are constantly refreshing their skill and knowledge.

-Ask if you can schedule a consultation with the recommended stylist.  This way you can observe the salon professionals in action and you will feel comfortable about the service you will be receiving.  The best time to schedule a consultation is a few weeks before you plan to book your appointment.

-Use the internet to your advantage.  Access the salon’s website; in addition to providing services and pricing, many websites offer specials and promotions, awards, credentials and pictures of the staff.

First visit

-Again, first impressions count, so when you arrive at the salon, take note of the service you receive when you first enter.  Are you greeted with a smile and guided to where you need to be?  A tour of the facility is always helpful so you become familiar with all of the services that are offered and locations of restrooms, closets, beverages, and magazines.  You should be made as comfortable as possible with your surroundings.

-Is the salon neat and clean?  You should choose a salon that upholds high standards of sanitation and ensure that all of its employees are properly licensed.  Does the salon décor match your style and mood?  You want to find a salon where you will enjoy yourself.

-The initial consultation with your stylist should begin with a friendly greeting and introduction.  You should receive a complete consultation at the stylists chair before receiving any services.  During the consultation, you should receive an explanation of everything that will be done to ensure that you relax throughout the service.  Topics that your stylist should discuss include:

*realistic expectations you can have for your hair and the results

          *hair type and texture

*suggestions for your bone structure and hair type

*your current home maintenance program and routine – what products          are you using, what tools are you using in your hair and how often do     you use them

*prices for all services getting done, maintenance and scheduling          for future visits

Be open and honest and try to provide your stylist with as much information as possible about how you want to look and what your expectations are.  You should also feel comfortable asking your stylist questions.  You should try and “get a peek” into their personality, experience and achievements to ensure you are making the right decision for your beauty goals.  How does your stylist look?  Do they present themselves well and make you feel comfortable?

-Once your consultation is over and you both agree on the service, you may be introduced to another staff member who will assist with the service and shampoo.  At times, your service may have one or two salon professionals who are working together to complete your look. During the service, you should not hesitate to ask questions.  You should be receiving an explanation of all professional hair care products that are being used, how to use them and the benefits of them.  As your style is being finished, you should also receive an explanation of how to maintain your style at home and tips to recreate your new look.

-After the service is completed, you should be escorted to an area to make sure you know what products were used during your visit, to pay for your services and to obtain feedback on your experience.  Your stylist may also suggest that you plan ahead for your next appointment and suggest a maintenance program and schedule to keep your style in optimum condition.

Ongoing Visits

Every time you go into the salon your experience should remain consistent.  You should be greeted professionally, the salon should be clean, and you should always receive a consultation before services are rendered.  A consultation always ensures that your objectives are being met.  Ongoing communication and consultation with your stylist is a necessity – you may be ready for “something new” with your look and that change should be communicated in the consultation.  Every visit to the salon should be similar to the first visit and you should always receive consistent “excellent client service”. A quality salon should offer superior staff training and mentoring so that all the stylists provide quality workmanship.

Finding the right salon for you is essential – whatever services you choose and whatever salon you visit – make sure you are comfortable and enjoy your time – you deserve it!!
